Drifts with a Change of Direction (Declines)

These usually come into consideration when a drift is desired for rubber tyred vehicle use but its straight length would sterilize too much of the resource or place the surface entry remote from the lease area. Obviously such drifts are not very compatible with conveyor haulage of coal or even with piped services (not at all compatible in the case of a spiral). They are however more commonly utilised in metalliferous mines where rubber tyred ore and waste transport is more widely employed.
